On April 17, 2011, the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra (BBSO) concludes its 2010-2011 Concert Season, entitled " For the Love of Music," with an evening of music from or about America in From the New World, conducted by Charles Greenwell and featuring violist and BBSO Young Artist String Competition Winner Abigail Elder. The BBSO concert will take place at Groves High School at 7:00 p.m. A silent auction will take place prior to the concert and during intermission. Tickets are $27 for adults (children 18 and under are free). Advance tickets can be purchased by calling 248-352-BBSO or by visiting www.bbso.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.

From the New World will open with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. Following this piece is Massachusetts-born composer Alan Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 2, Op. 132: Mysterious Mountain. Young Artist Abigail Elder will then perform Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, by William Walton with the orchestra. Following intermission will be Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95: From the New World. A celebrated Czech composer, Dvořák was the toast of New York City by the time he wrote From the New World in 1893. Teaching at the National Conservatory, he sought to help his students build an American national music. To that end, he wove into his “New World” symphony a number of references to American melodies - particularly spirituals like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Goin' Home.”

Now in its 36th season, the BBSO has been voted one of the best orchestras in all of Michigan. Under the direction of conductor Charles Greenwell, the BBSO is committed to bringing the community exceptional classical and pops concerts at affordable prices.
