The Birdwatching Open coincides with International Migratory Bird Day and focuses attention on the important role that golf courses play in conserving avian habitat. Cantigny Golf will be one of many golf courses across North America participating in this Audubon-sanctioned event. The goal is for birders to find and identify as many species as they can on their "home" course. As a registered Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, Cantigny Golf is a great birding spot! We'll concentrate on the non-play areas that are maintained by the grounds crew as wildlife habitat. We'll be safe and not disturb the golfers! This event occurs during the peak of spring migration so our list of sightings will be high. In 2009 we tallied 77 species, including colorful warblers, tanagers and orioles. We even found a Black-Billed Cuckoo! No matter what we "score" this year, it'll be a fun morning. Some of us will probably continue birding in the afternoon too. Stay as long as you wish. We'll meet in the southweast corner of the Cantigny Golf parking lot, across the drive from the Purple Martin houses. Entrance to the golf course is on Mack Road.
