An intimate view of local Los Angeles birds is on display at an upcoming exhibition at the Audubon Center at Debs Park, starting March 9th.
The theme of Breeding & Nesting is explored in the photographs of Joanne Chase-Mattillo. Joanne has been a docent for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy/Mountains Education Recreation Conservation Authority since 1991. She leads monthly photo walks at King Gillette Park in Calabasas and Franklin Canyon Park, with a Beverly Hills zip code of 90210.
All the large scale photographs in the exhibition were taken on the public photo walks that Joanne has led locally in King Gillette and Franklin Canyon, where through fortunate synchronicity new born coots and mother posed for photos in Franklin Canyon’s Heavenly Pond, while a mallard stands among turtles in the same watering hole. From King Gillette two varieties of herons nest, while a wood-pecker rests in trees.
Catch the exhibit on it's opening night on March 9th, or visit it through May 25th. If you visit during the daytime, you might enjoy taking a walk through the woods while you're at the Audubon Center, and see if you can spot any of these birds yourself!
