Big Mel, aka Mel Covard, singer, musician, songwriter, was born and raised in Chicago Illinois. Mel was lucky to grow up surrounded by a very talented and musical family. His grandmother sung in a popular gospel group during the 1970's called The Loving Sisters. Inspired as he was he began to learn more about his musical background. Big Mel currently plays several instruments, piano, keyboards, bass guitar, vocalist, writes and produce's his own music. His friends call him the Super Producer The One Man Band. Most of all Big Mel loves the idea of working with a genuine team of individuals and getting their input on what makes a good hit song. Big Mel believes in that old philosophy that two or three heads is better than one no matter how talented they are. He says working with a team gives him that feeling he used to get when he was younger watching his family make good music together. His big break came in the early 90's as the founder of the group Subway out of Chicago, that was signed to Biv10 / Motown Records. Big Mel produced three songs that got The Brat signed to So So Def, Jermaine Dupri Record label. He also was one of the founders of Motown recording artist Sparkle. In 1994 Big Mel joined the group Public Announcement. A few years later Big Mel left the group to pursue his solo career. Big Mel since then has opened for the legendary Freddie Jackson, Atlantic Star, Al Hudson and One Way, Rubin Studder, 50 cent, and Salena Johnson. Big Mel currently has his on video show called The Big Mel Video Show on channel 98 in Muskegon Michigan and works as a radio personality on 103.7 The Beat.
