The humble bike: voted best invention by a Radio 4 listener poll last year, rhapsodised by countless artists, its riders the objects of endless, heated debate throughout London — and for two years, the theme of a film festival. American films dominate this year's programme; one entry celebrates more than 30 years of the BMX, while another reveals survival tactics of NYC bike messengers. The UK gets a pedal in with a film documenting British cycling champion Tom Simpson, who tragically died during the 1967 Tour de France. Yet it is the Estonian film Adventure High, a chronicle of five friends' four-month journey from Mongolia to Nepal, that will probably dominate discussions round the cycle shops.
