Barend Mons is the founder of WikiProfessionals Consortium. Knewco provides WikiProfessional as a vehicle to facilitate communities (of scientists, patients, professionals, et cetera) to annotate the available information and concepts, and add to the corpus of knowledge, keeping it more current and up-to-date than the formal literature evercould. In WikiProfessional, all annotations and newly created concepts are distinguishable from those that are 'mined' from authoritative sources - such as peer-reviewed journals and curated databases - in order to avoid any confusion. The purpose of WikiProfessional is to provide the community with the option of including facts that have not (yet) been formally validated, but which are nonetheless considered useful, in analyses and the exploration of knowledge.
Barend Mons performed over a decade of fundamental research on the genetic differentiation of malaria parasites and he published over 45 peer reviewed scientific papers on that topic. Much of this research was conducted in close partnership with colleagues from malaria-endemic (developing) countries. For his pioneering research on the in vitro culture and differentiation of rodent and human malaria parasites he received the Eyckman medal from the Netherlands Society for Tropical Medicine.
