Tools from the Darkside: Charette
by Ardith Lanstra-Nothdurft, Whitewater Projects

Interested in new way to mine and filter piles of design suggestions from a huge team?

Charrette is a tool that grows from the architecture, engineering and arts professions with roots in the 19th Century École des Beaux-Arts School of Paris. Why on earth would such an archaic tool be of interest to the modern Agile project team? Like mind mapping, stand-ups and storyboards it is a powerful tool that brings people together to collaboratively tackle complex problems. When used well, charrette allows a project complex (build team, stakeholders, management, client, users etc) to mine and filter creative information from a diverse group of contributors in a proactive and energized way. Is your team tired of watching one person push pieces of architecture or UI around on a screen while everyone else watches? Do you need a fast planning spike between sprints one and two? Here is alternative method to electrify the process. A brief talk on the charrette process will be followed by fun and interactive team exercises demonstrating its practical use; providing attendees with hands-on skills to put this process to work immediately. Creative controlled chaos ahead!

Speaker Bio:
Ardith has been agile-ing around the Pacific Northwest with Joseph Flahiff of Whitewater Projects for two years now. She has a Master's degree from University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Design and an MBA from University of Washington with a focus in Change Management. For the past seventeen years she has worked with some of the least Agile organizations in the northwest: enormous distributed, matrixed teams on large government capital improvement projects. Whitewater Projects has worked with governmental teams, setting them free of process for process sake and introducing a new concept, a delivered deliverable.
