Riverside Theatres
Sunday, 28 October at 5pm
In a year of celebrations to honour the 75th birthday of one of Australia's leading jazz musicians, Riverside is proud to present Bernie McGann with the legendary Paul Grabowsky at Riverside Theatres on Sunday 28 October at 5pm.
Bernie McGann has been at the forefront of Australia's energetic modern jazz scene for more than 50 years. Long regarded as the most original alto saxophonist in Australian jazz, he is performing in concert with long-term collaborator, Melbourne-based pianist and composer Paul Grabowsky.
Paul Grabowsky's compositional skills give him a profound understanding of the jazz tradition and make him a perfect partner for McGann, whose ability to reinvent and re-imagine something fresh from familiar material is almost peerless. Both artists love the work of Thelonious Monk and enjoy improvising on the standards of the great American song book to produce music that is fresh and exhilarating. Joining McGann and Grabowsky is the outstanding Jonathan Zwartz on bass and hard driving "generation next" drummer (and winner of the 2011 national Jazz Award), Tim Firth.
