This multi-session series will discuss a variety of examples of the image of the Jew in English literature, from its biblical origins through the Medieval and Elizabethan eras to the 20th Century. Works under discussion will include Chaucer's 'The Prioress's Tale,' Marlowe's 'The Jew of Malta,' Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice,' Scott's 'Ivanhoe,' Dickens' 'Oliver Twist,' Eliot's 'Daniel Deronda,' Joyce's 'Ulysses,' the poetry of T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound and the novels of Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene.
