Raised by a curandera (healer) mother and a nagual (shaman) grandfather, Ruiz chose instead to attend a traditional medical school and work as a surgeon. It wasn't until a near-death experience changed his life that Ruiz reconnected with his Toltec roots. He is now dedicated to sharing the teachings of the ancient Toltec through his books, audio publications, workshops and spiritual journeys to sacred sites around the world. Ruiz has passed his ancestral legacy on to his son, don Jose, with whom he now collaborates. Father and son have co-authored, The Fifth Agreement, just released this spring.
