Beauty Academy of Kabul: A Slide Talk by Rosemary Stasek will take place at the Belmont Library on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 pm and at the Woodside Library on October 12 at 7:00 pm.
Freedom is beautiful, but sometimes beauty is freedom. Recently returned from Afghanistan, Ms. Stasek will show current slides of the now famous Beauty Academy of Kabul. The Academy is composed of a group of hairdressers from Britain and the United States who go to Kabul on an unusual humanitarian mission -- to teach Afghan women, only recently liberated from the tyranny of the Taliban, how to cut hair. They are teaching women, who were banned from schools and the workplace under the Taliban, marketable skills (hairdressers make good money in Afghanistan), giving women the means to be independent. And finally, they are teaching the women to reclaim their public face and to help other women do the same.
