Premier Beatles Tribute band The Sun Kings presents "From Hamburg to the Rooftop" in concert. This year they celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Please Please Me and With The Beatles, in addition to nods to the entire Beatles songbook. With over 150 numbers in their repertoire spanning the entire Beatles epoch, The Sun Kings is a force to be reckoned with.
Drew Harrison, Lennon vocals, guitar and percussion, says his first vivid memory was "rocking in front of our large Motorola stereo/TV console to the song 'A Hard Days Night.' It's not a stretch to say that Lennon's influence lead to his eventual degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley.
Bruce Coe, the George Harrison vocals and guitar, says he remembers "The White Album" as his first real exposure to the sound, via his groovy Sears portable record player with the psychedelic blinking speakers.
Drummer, percussionist and vocalist Steve Scarpelli fills the Ringo Starr role in the band. He started drums at age eight during the heyday of Beatlemania, and "was drawn to Ringo's ability to inject excitement, energy and emotion."
Ruben Salis on keys, percussion, harmonica, and background vocals is the band's 'Billy Preston.' Salis says he "landed my dream gig with The Sun Kings, after a diverse career in performance, sound engineering, and producing.
Newest member James Funk covers McCartney vocals, bass and guitar. His earliest Beatles memory was of when he was about 7 being awakened by his four much older siblings to watch 'A Hard Days Night' ..."I was transfixed...the high wit and humor, the clear joy of it all and most of all, their music and singing...It is the most joyful, concise, catchy and lovely collection of tunes yet assembled under one roof in the now vast rock and roll catalog." That about wraps it up.
