7:30-9:30 p.m.: Main Program (below)
1)Simeon Yates, Sheffield Hallam University
A Device for Doing "Culture": Gender, Design, and Use of the Mobile Phone
Simeon Yates will present a range of empirical findings on the interpersonal and public use of the mobile phone. This work examines the gender differences and users' attitudes to the design and usability of phones.
SIMEON YATES is director of the Cultural, Communication, and Computing Research Institute at Sheffield Hallam University in the U.K.
2) Scott Jenson, Google
Why Mobile Phones are not PDAs
Scott Jenson will give a brief history of the mobile phone: how it grew and blossomed as a communicator but has badly stumbled with the advent of data services. The solution is to deeply understand the pros and cons of phones and create new services that are not "scaled-down web UIs."
SCOTT JENSON is now a mobile UI designer for Google. He worked at Apple on System 7, Newton, and the Apple Human Interface guidelines and directed Symbian's DesignLab.
3)Mor Naaman, Yahoo! Research
Demo of ZoneTag
Mor Naaman will demo ZoneTag, a rich mobile client that enables context-aware upload of photographs from camera phones.
MOR NAAMAN is a research scientist for Yahoo! Research. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
