The eclectic mix of musical genres promises to have something for everyone and produce a seamless afternoon of great music. The day will begin with 4 hours of world class jazz and gospel starting at 12 noon and going to about 4PM. Jazz trumpeter and educator Khalil Shaheed has pulled together an incredible lineup staring legendary vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and featuring New Orleans trumpet giant Nicholas Payton. From 4PM till 8PM or so, Hip Hop enthusiasts will be treated to live performances by some of Oakland?s own legendary Hip Hop and R&B recording artists including Too Short, and Keek Da Sneak (see others above). Tony Toni Tone?s Dwayne Wiggins has assembled a who?s who of the Bay Area Hip Hop scene.
Brooks, Wiggins, and Shaheed all have been deeply touched by the tragedy, (all have roots in the south).
The unwillingness of our government to respond made it crystal clear that we need to now and in the future be able to respond on our own to help where it is needed. In the spirit of New Orleans and its restoration this concert is a tribute to the life, culture, spirit, and resilience of the survivors of Katrina.
