Innovation Salon IV : Scramble This, Ye Scurvy Dog! DRM at World's End
In the last couple of years, digital rights management has become an ever-more contested issue among corporations, consumers, technology innovators and so-called tech pirates. While a torrent of music companies see greener grass in their decision to sell their tunes DRM-free, the Recording Industry of America continues to pursue lawsuits against individuals who rip and share their mp3s online. Does Amazon’s new DRM-free music shop signal the beginning of the end for DRM? Will movies be next?
How will the tech community balance the competing interests of consumers, rights holders, and technology innovators into the future? And what does it all mean for independent media and innovation?
Featuring panelists Jess Hemerly (Institute for the Future), members of I am Spoonbender, Fred von Lohmann (Electronic Frontier Foundation), and Brooke Wentz (The Rights Workshop ). Moderated by Ken Goldberg (Director of the Berkeley Center for New Media).
