Stand Up Dance and DanceWorks present
based on actual unrelated events
a new solo by performance powerhouse Meagan O’Shea
Fresh off her incredible nuit blanche performance, dance like no is watching, Meagan O’Shea is back with a new solo show based on actual unrelated events. Opening Tuesday, October 20th at HUB 14, each performance will feature guest opening shorts by Susie Burpee, Val Calam, Alicia Grant/Cara Spooner, Karen Kaeja, and Julia Sasso.
Fusing contemporary dance, physical theatre and storytelling with comedy, O'Shea seeks to discover the relationships between: home/less/ness in the body, the evolution of language and how that relates to movement, and the superfluous nature of the prolific global corn crop and what's happening to the honeybees. Pushing towards the ridiculous in order to turn ideas upside down to look at them anew, O'Shea is defining this new style of work as stand up dance: a synthesis of contemporary dance and stand-up comedy. Strange bedfellows’ maybe, as contemporary dance often gets a very serious rap. Not the case with stand up dance. As the Montreal Gazette said of O’Shea’s first stand up dance creation Coffee for One “Stand Up Dance is a rare bird. Off the wall, impossible to categorize… fun”.
