BAM! Festival Brings National Performing Artists to Austin: ProArts Collective jumpstarts Austin’s Black Arts renaissance

Austin – Beginning this evening, and continuing through Sunday, October 8, ProArts Collective presents the first performing arts festival in Austin that features works created and performed by nationally recognized Black artists. This long-anticipated festival is titled BAM! for the Black Arts Movement.

BAM! is a celebration of the Black arts movement that is experiencing a creative resurgence throughout the U.S. and abroad. As ProArts Executive Director Lisa Byrd sees it, this “rebirth” is nothing less than a 21st century renaissance. “The BAM! Festival brings together an impressive slate of Black artists from around the nation to celebrate African American performing arts right here in Austin,” says Byrd. “Collectively, these carefully selected pieces delve straight into the heart of Americana – with stories of love, betrayal, politics, and redemption –and are portrayed through dance, spoken word and music. There is truly something for people of all ages and cultures to enjoy during this inaugural event!”

ProArts Collective’s BAM! has a lofty goal: to showcase national artists who are creating enduring work for the new millennium. The works are edgy, relevant, thought provoking, and designed to engage new audiences in creating and establishing emerging voices of the new Black arts movement. Come and discover for yourself the meaning and mission of BAM!
