The Zach Bartholomew Trio is a fresh, young group devoted to bringing swinging, straight-ahead jazz to the Southeast. They have a wide repertoire that ranges from the classic jazz standards to daring originals. The ZBT has been performing together since the spring of 2009. Their sound comes from a lineage of great jazz trios that they’ve studied: The Ahmad Jamal Trio, The Oscar Peterson Trio, The Bill Evans Trio, The Brad Mehldau Trio, and The Marcus Roberts Trio. Each member contributes his own unique experiences, musical tastes, and personality to the sound of the group as a whole. The trio has experience playing at clubs, restaurants, weddings, private events, and music festivals.

Zach Bartholomew has a bold, unique approach to the piano which draws from influences ranging from James P. Johnson to Brad Mehldau. He uses intricate rhythms and melodic lines for building and developing ideas while improvising. In addition to the intellectual complexities of Zach’s approach, there is a deep-rooted sense of swing at the foundation of everything he plays. Miles Bozeman has mastered the ability to compliment the piano and bass without being an overpowering force on the drums. His swing and rhythmic nuances add a musical voice and texture that complete the trio’s sound. Brandon Robertson contributes a sense of modern hip hop and jazz from the rhythmic standpoint of the bass. He creates bass lines that groove hard, yet keep a melodic touch to the music. He supports the band by keeping the feel of swing and incorporating modern styles into the music.

Individually, each member has studied music at the colligate level and has dedicated himself to the mastery of his respective instrument. All three have also had the experience of working both individually and collectively with some of the top jazz educators in the Southeast, including pianist Marcus Roberts and the Marcus Roberts Trio. The group has also had the honor of appearing as guest performers and clinicians at Blake Performing Arts High School. In the fall of 2009 they were featured in an article in Florida State University’s newspaper, the FSView, as well as featured in The Jazz Club of Sarasota’s Jazz at Two series.

The ZBT plays all of their music from memory. This allows them to focus on the music and on improvisation. To help give their improvisation organization and coherence they create tight arrangements of the tunes they play. This provides a nice balance which permits the group to be completely expressive and keep a sense of structure. Each member brings some modern-day flavor to the trio as well as a deep-rooted love for the American music we call jazz. They have a deep respect for the past and are looking to contribute something of their own to the music in the future

Zach Bartholomew was born on March 13th, 1986, in Tallahassee, FL. He grew up south of Tallahassee in the small town of Sopchoppy, and began taking piano lessons when he was 11 years old. During high school he played in the jazz band for two years, but it wasn't until after a visit to New Orleans with his family that he truly became interested in jazz. When he was 17 years old he began studying periodically with Professor Bill Peterson at Florida State University, and attended the FSU Honors Jazz Camp during the summer.

After a year of studying jazz and practicing, he successfully auditioned into the Jazz Program at Florida State University. While at FSU, Zach was able to take several private lessons with pianist Marcus Roberts as well as work with Roberts, Roland Guerin, Rodney Jordan, and Jason Marsalis in small group and trio settings.

In May of 2009 he earned a Bachelors of Arts in Music and graduated magna cum laude.

During his time at FSU, Zach has been taking up gigs all over the panhandle region. In 2007 he began playing on a regular basis with his good friend David Smith (trombone) in the Dave Smith Quartet. After a year or so playing as a sideman,

Zach formed his own trio; which was featured on Tallahassee jazz radio station WJZT’s website in the fall of 2008. In 2009, his trio was featured in Florida State University’s newspaper, FSView. Currently, he performs with his trio, a quartet, and accompanies a variety of vocalists across Florida.

Zach has experience performing in a wide variety of settings, which include playing at restaurants, clubs, wedding receptions, private parties, pageants, and music festivals, such as B-Sharps Jazz Café, Jazz Club of Sarasota, and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa. In addition to playing as a sideman and leading his trio, Zach performs in other musical contexts such as solo piano gigs, duo concerts with horn players, and accompanying vocalists.

Born in Tampa, Fl on December 20, 1985 to a gospel songstress mother and a master Sgt. In the Air Force, Brandon L. Robertson exemplified passion and musical aspirations in the field of entertainment. At the age of 10, he became very fascinated with the upright bass while taking music lessons from a former teacher, who was also a member of the Florida Symphony Orchestra. He quickly attached himself to the instrument and hasn’t let go since. While in Middle school, he performed in various District Orchestral Festivals, having been accepted 3 years into the Hillsborough County, All County Orchestra.

After being accepted into Howard W. Blake School of the Performing Arts, he joined the jazz band to try something different from his previous orchestral background. He would go on to receive straight superior all four years in the high school jazz combo and for solo classical bass at the All County District and State competition. In 2003, his high school jazz band took home first place at the San Francisco High School Jazz Festival for most outstanding jazz band. He soon started to catch buzz from fellow musicians around town and would play electric bass for several churches and music festivals such as the Clearwater Jazz Festival High School Jazz Combo. He further went to attend the FSU Double Bass music camp under the direction of Professor Melanie Punter.

With drive and motivation already pumping through his veins, in February 2004, Brandon auditioned for the Florida State University Jazz Program and was accepted a month before his high school graduation. After moving to Tallahassee, FL in fall of 2004, he auditioned for the FSU Jazz Combo. While there, he first met his fellow musician and friend Zach Bartholomew, after both were placed in the same combo. They have worked together ever since, Brandon eventually becoming the bassist in the Zach Bartholomew Trio.

Brandon attributes some of his major influences on bass as Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Israel Crosby, Sam Jones, Derek Hodges, Ron Carter, Oscar Pettiford, Victor Wooden, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, and Bootsy Collins. He has also had the fortunate opportunity to work with The Marcus Roberts Trio, Scotty Barnhart, Bill Peterson, Leon Anderson, and Chick Corea as well as been privileged of meeting and studying with some of the finest bass players around. Such would include Roland Guerin, Rufus Reid, Rodney Jordan, and Clarence Seay. Miles Bozeman was born on April, 5, 1989 in Tallahassee, FL. He became a musician in sixth grade when he decided to play trumpet, which he continued to play for the next six years. During that time he performed in four state festivals and ten district festivals. He also had the pleasure to perform at two invitational events - the B.O.A. (Bands of America) festival, and a conductor’s conference at Vanderbilt University.

In 2004 Miles began taking drum lessons with Ronen Itzik, a masters student at FSU and Berklee graduate. After a few more teachers and two summers at the FSU Honors Jazz Camp, several great opportunities opened up for him during his senior year such as:

Playing drum set/pan in Lion steel and being invited to perform at the FMEA conference where he had the chance to work with composer/panist Ray Holman.
Playing drum set in the FSU Honors Jazz Band, where he had the chance to perform with Wycliffe Gordon.
Playing percussion in the Leon band, including the drum line and orchestral percussion.

That fall Miles was accepted into the Jazz Program at Florida State University's College of Music, where he presently studies with Leon Anderson. At FSU, he has worked with Marcus Roberts, Rodney Jordan, Roland Guerin, and Jason Marsalis in small group situations. He has also had the chance to attend master classes from Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, and Rufus Reid. In addition to playing in jazz combos at FSU, he also performs in Florida State's Steel Band, Mas ‘N’ Steel, where he had the opportunity to perform with Jeff Narell.

Currently, Miles is a sophomore at Florida State University earning a jazz performance degree. This past year, he became one of the founding members of the Zach Bartholomew Trio, which gigs regularly around Tallahassee and the panhandle area.
