Calvary's Chancel Choir, accompanied by orchestra and soloists, will be presenting the dramatic events of Holy Week through J.S. Bach's masterpiece, "The St. John Passion". During the final four weeks of Lent, the "Passion" will be performed--during the worship service, as was conducted in Bach's time--in four parts. The services will be conducted in Calvary's sanctuary at 11am.
The St. John Passion was composed by Bach using the 18th and 19th chapters of the Bible's "Gospel According to John."
The congregation will also participate during the Passion in singing the chorales (hymns) with the choir throughout the work. The roles of John the Evangelist and Jesus will be sung by acclaimed Bay Area performers Brian Thorsett (tenor) and Jeffrey Fields (baritone).
Preceding each worship performance, Calvary will host Dr. Bruce Lamott, a noted Bach scholar and professor of music history, who will conduct lectures giving context and history to the sections of the Passion to be performed that week. Lectures will be given in Calvary's library lounge at 10am.
