Avalon String Quartet presents Viennese Song February 10, 2011

Avalon String Quartet, one of the country’s leading chamber music ensembles, will be joined by guest artist Julia Bentley (mezzo-soprano) to present the Winter engagement of its 2010-2011 Chicago Concert Series, a concert titled Viennese Song. The evening will focus on the Viennese song tradition. Bentley will join the Quartet in performing the emotionally complex Lyric Suite by Alban Berg. The program will also include Franz Schubert’s dramatic String Quartet in D minor, more commonly known as “Death and the Maiden.” Schubert's String Quartet, one of his most beloved, takes its nickname from his own song by the same name, which becomes the main theme of the famous second movement. Berg and his contemporaries took the lyricism inherent in the song tradition perfected by Schubert into the expressionist musical language of the Second Viennese School.
