Authors Rita T. Kohn and James W. Brown will discuss their new book of oral histories of the modern-day Delaware Indians on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, 3001 Central Street, Evanston.
Kohn and Brown, who are both affiliated with the journalism department at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, are co-editors of "Long Journey Home: Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians" (Indiana University Press, 2007).
Through first-person accounts, "Long Journey Home" presents oral histories which span the post-Civil War era to the present and tell of personal and tribal events. The Delaware, or Lenape, were forcibly removed from their original home on the eastern seaboard and were pushed further west in a series of forced displacements.
According to the authors, "The Delawares have historically been denied a voice. Here we experience how eloquently they speak."
The "Journal of Folklore Research" called "Long Journey Home" "an attractive, wonderfully illustrated and accessible book"in which the editors "have successfully conveyed" the diversity of the Delaware people.
Kohn and Brown will also screen excerpts from the companion television documentary "Long Journey Home: The Delawares of Indiana," produced by an Indianapolis public television station and now available on DVD and VHS cassette. Kohn was co-producer and co-director of the documentary. Brown was the productions still photographer.
Admission to the event is free with an entrance donation to the museum. Suggested donation is $5 for adults; $2.50 for seniors, students, and children. Maximum suggested admission per family is $10. For information, phone (847) 475-1030. On the Net: http://www.mitchellmuseum.org.
