Building a Southwest Regional Spaceport in New Mexico was first proposed in March 1990. In 2006, after sixteen years of concept evolution, technological development, and political coordination, Spaceport America began operation of its vertical launch facility. Now, in 2012, the architecturally stunning Virgin Galactic Gateway to Space terminal/hanger facility is nearing completion in anticipation of the nation’s first suborbital flights for space tourists. Loretta Hall, author of Out of this World: New Mexico’s Contributions to Space Travel, will explain how New Mexico became the site of the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport.
