Underlab Studios, an emerging artist movement of South Florida which consists of local talent ranging from the gamut of art's genres: filmmakers, singers, songwriters, artists, music producers & engineers, poets, martial artists, world renown DJs, B-Boys, fire-spinners, belly dancers, comedians, clothing lines, power jewelry, etc... has now has teamed up with Fort Lauderdale's historic Cinema Paradiso to showcase a monthly event of local art, music, and short films called the Auteur Explosion. Located in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, the city jewel of Cinema Paradiso (which used to be a church) has the capacity to contain the constant influx of new and local talent showcased at this monthly event. Dawn Dubriel (local filmmaker and video producer) and her business partner, J.Vinazza (local filmmaker and animator) commenced coordinating the monthly Auteur Explosions in order to raise awareness of the local, amazing, and abundant flavour of SoFla's culture by holding monthly Auteur Explosions.
The next Auteur Explosion is on Friday, January 23, 2009. In addition to a night filled with art, music, and film, Belly dancing by The Goddess Studio of downtown Hollywood and Stand-Up Comedy by local comedian, Matt Z will be showcased as well.
In February, on Friday the 13th, the theme is Valentine's Day Eve Massacre and will have local horror-core style rappers and bands, spooky art by local legends, and scary films by local filmmakers.
"Utilizing film, performance art and music to create a new collaborative art form Underlab Studios is an integral part of an exciting new movement in South Florida. Their efforts will help to re-define the South Florida art scene, push through the barriers of apathy in the land of tourists and transients and finally put us on the map as THE place to find cutting edge art and talent in the U.S." ~ Rick Santese, South Florida Screenwriter

Operate year-round by the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF), this 200+ seat theater mixes old world charm with state-of-the-art projection and sound, plus the most comfortable, plush stadium style seats in South Florida. With an outdoor covered patio, a full bar and concessions, along with FREE parking, Cinema Paradiso is perfect for gatherings before or after regularly scheduled films, special events and receptions, fundraisers, and other events. Cinema Paradiso may also be rented for private functions.
Cinema Paradiso also has quite a history. The originally building was constructed in 1947 as the New First Methodist Church (after the original church was destroyed by the 1926 Hurricane). In 1986, actress, director and playwright, Vinette Carroll, the first African-American woman to direct a Broadway Show, renovated the space for stage plays. In 1997, FLIFF began presenting independent films and by the following year began programming the theatre full time. FLIFF appropriately renamed the theatre after director Giuseppe Tornatore’s acclaimed, Italian film about the celebration of youth, friendship, and the everlasting magic of the movies …Cinema Paradiso.
