Australia's War 1939 - 1945 July 16, 2013

By 1939 Australia was already a very different country from the one that entered the Great War of 1914-1918. No longer with the brashness and confidence of the Working Mans Paradise that some people imagined Australia was after Federation, Australians had suffered worse than most developed countries during the Great Depression and many of the early volunteers for the volunteer army the Second Australian Imprerial Force, we known as economic conscripts, seeing employment in the army as their first full time job. The Anzac Legend was well established and there was every expectation that these men would live up to that. But this war was to be very different for Australian soldiers. Not only was much of it to be fought closer to home, creating fear and panic amongst the civilian population, but this army would spend a great deal of its time on home soil, often waiting in vain for the American commander, Douglas MacArthur, to call them into action.
