The First Century BCE was a time of great conflict for the Roman world as various powers competed for control of the state. The victor of Romes vicious civil wars was Gaius Octavius (later called Augustus), great-nephew and adopted heir of Julius Caesar. His reforms created a new political reality: hereditary monarchy in all but name. This course examines the remarkable life and achievements of Romes first Emperor: Augustus.
