Menolly is a gifted musician but girls in her village do not become harpers. When she creates a song, she is punished for it and runs away. TGellan takes her to a dragon-training village where she meets Tirolt. She encourages him as a dragonrider, but begs him to keep her identity a secret, fearing she will be sent home.
