Audience as Subject, Part 1: Medium & Yoshua Okón: 2007-2010 Opening Night Party
Fri, Oct 29, 8 pm -11 pm
Celebrate the opening of YBCA’s latest visual arts exhibitions, Audience as Subject, Part 1: Medium and Yoshua Okón: 2007-2010. The always fabulous YBCA crowd will enjoy the music Mental 99, a San Francisco-based instrumental rock duo. They employ "live looping" — recording passages of music as they perform them, and then improvising new layers over them. Their music can be eerie or funny, abrasive or beautiful, and sometimes all those things at once.
Audience as Subject is a two-part visual arts exhibition that reverses the role of the audience from that of spectator to subject, featuring thought-provoking work like caraballo-farman’s Venerations (Applause 3), an installation in which hundreds of clips of audiences applauding in TV studios for live talk shows are shown continuously on multiple video screens surrounding the viewer. The exhibition will also include works by Stefan Constantinescu, Danica Dakić, Adrian Paci, Shizu Saldamando, Gabriel Acevedo Velarde, and Ulla Von Brandenburg.
Mexican artist Yoshua Okón deals with a similar set of issues in his performative and interactive video works—they are not complete without the participation and complicity of the audience as they react to what they experience. Among the works included in the exhibition are Bocanegra (2005-2007), Canned Laughter (2009), House Meister (2008), Hipnostasis (2009), and Rusos Blancos (White Russians) (2008).
