The Gesamtkunstwerk Project, in association with the Bridge Theatre Company, presents the New York premiere of Attila Clemann’s award winning play …and stockings for the ladies, directed by Zach Fraser and starring Brendan McMurtry-Howlett, as part of the 8th annual soloNOVA Arts Festival.
Inspired by the true story of Squadron Leader Ted Aplin and his assistant Stanley Winfield, …and stockings for the ladies is a powerful look at post war Germany and recovery from war. During a tour of duty that began after VE Day Ted Aplin and Stanley Winfield were stationed not far from the Bergen Belsen Concentration camp. Despite specific orders from RCAF officers to stay away from the camp the two became deeply involved in assisting the rehabilitation of the Jewish refugees in particular the dozens of orphans left in wake of the Nazi regime. An ad hoc mail system was established and much needed school supplies, clothing and food was shuttled from Canada and England to Bergen Belsen. Ted Aplin helped reconnect a number of families in Canada with lost relatives in Germany and all of this while facing fierce condemnation from his superiors. This solo performance brings to life Ted’s letters home, the voices of survivors he met and numerous others all with a wink and a charm that only Ted could embody.
