"You can't go to heaven." Ashley had already determined that Emma, the only Jewish girl in her class, did not believe in Jesus. Emma protested, but Ashley persisted. "If you don't believe in Jesus, you are going to hell."

So began the front page story Thursday May 7th, 2009, in the Santa Barbara Independent. Journalist Katherine Stewart published her expose of the "Good News Club", a national, evangelical Christian group on a mission to proselytize to young children on local school campuses. * Katherine Stewart is a journalist and author who, in addition to the SB Independent, has contributed to The Times (in London, England); Newsweek International; Slate; Rolling Stone; Santa Barbara Magazine; and others. She is the author of two novels, "The Yoga Mamas" and "Class Mothers".

* Her husband Matthew Stewart is a business consultant and author, who has lived in many different nations and American states. He has published books including, "The Courtier And The Heretic - Liebnitz, Spinoza, and the Fate of God in The Modern World"; and "Monturiol's Dream - The Extraordinary Story of the Submarine Inventor Who Wanted to Save the World".

The Stewarts live in Santa Barbara and the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara is pleased to welcome them both to our Saturday afternoon monthly meeting, open to all for discussion of this important topic.
