Green Planet Films Presents Monthly Environmental Film Series
Attack of the Killer Starfish! Presented by Green Planet Films
SPONSORED BY: California Dive Center ?where the familiy learns to dive?
Crown of Thorns Starfish: Monster From the Shallows.
An international multi-award winning film from Australia. (48 mins)
This seemingly indestructible starfish is devouring coral reefs around the globe in epidemic proportions.
Some tourism operators spend $300,000 a year to clear COTS-infested areas of the Great Barrier Reef, so that snorkelers and dive visitors can enjoy a pleasant reef experience. SWAT teams of divers try to keep ahead of the plague by individually poisoning these coral-eating starfish, but the numbers are too great. What might be causing these excessive breeding outbreaks, and how can a balance be struck?
The evening includes socializing at Varnish?s beer/wine/sake bar, gallery viewing, film, and guest speaker Brian Huse, Executive Director, Coral Reef Alliance.
