Market Street Gallery is very excited to announce Atmospheric Conditions; a solo exhibition showcasing emotionally charged paintings by Victoria Veedell, a thoughtful study of how color and light affects space. The radiation of vibrant colors will engage the viewer; the soft gradients will sooth the viewer's soul. The exhibit will open May 1, 2012, and run through June 29, 2012. The artist reception will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012, from 6 PM - 8 PM.
Artist Statement
by Victoria Veedell
I explore how color and light affect space and the physical sense of place. For me Atmospheric Conditions are more than weather conditions, they elicit a personal response to the landscape. The setting of my work may be abstracted landscapes, but the root of my work is an emotional reaction to the environment. My paintings are based on nature, fashioned from memory and imagination, and imply landscapes not necessarily seen, but felt. I dissolve the landscape, leaving only what I consider to be the essence of nature. I hope to draw the viewer to the light and colors that radiate from the canvas and give them pause.
Travel is an important component in my work, as it allows me to observe and compare gradients of color, light and atmosphere in different geographic areas. On my travels through India, the Patagonia region of Argentina and Chile and the countryside of Japan, I gathered ideas by making small watercolors of landscapes and taking many photographs, which become my sources of inspiration in the studio. I continually examine the effects of light and form in the natural world and living in the San Francisco Bay Area allows for access to an amazing array of Atmospheric Conditions.
