Nearly 25 million Americans suffer from asthma (over 8% of adults, over 9% of children), and 60% of asthma cases are “allergic-asthma.” The prevalence of asthma has been increasing since the early 1980s across all age, sex and racial groups.

Asthma is characterized by inflammation of the air passages resulting in the temporary narrowing of the airways that transport air from the nose and mouth to the lungs. Asthma symptoms can be caused by allergens or irritants that are inhaled into the lungs, resulting in inflamed, clogged and constricted airways. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing and tightness in the chest. In severe cases, asthma can be deadly.
Although there is no cure for asthma, asthma can be managed with proper prevention and treatment.

Massage Therapy can be a beneficial aid in the care of asthma and other breathing conditions. As the muscles of respiration become fatigued and locked up from constant coughing, wheezing and straining to increase intake volume, in many cases the very same muscles become frozen and restricted, even forming adhesions which will limit the natural movement necessary for normal inhalation and exhalation.

When this occurs the ability to breath is reduced, adding to and increasing the problems that asthma inflicts upon its sufferers.

By relaxing the fatigued muscles, releasing the adhesions and allowing the muscles of respiration to function at their full capacity, a person can breathe with less stress allowing the body to deal with the condition better.

This class helps us to understand what asthma really is, what many of the causes are and some of the medication treatments being used to manage asthma. We’ll also learn what muscles are involved and how we can assist in the release of these muscles through massage, stretches, acupressure points and reflexology points that deal with breathing.
