In 1946 'Life' magazine assigned a young, relatively inexperienced photographer Jack Birns to Shanghai with the instructions that he document the ongoing Chinese civil war. A selection of these photographs portray the upheaval of war, societal changes and the approaching revolution that would change Shanghai and China forever.
