December 1st 2006- Like the Spice, Art Studio presents a group exhibition, showcasing emerging contemporary artists reassembling current concepts and materials into multidimensional mixed media compositions. This new show displays three separate techniques employed in this art construction system, resulting in both two and three-dimensional elements.
Bricolage: a form of construction, of a sculpture or a structure of ideas, achieved by using materials at hand.
Collage: a work of visual arts made from an assemblage of different forms, creating a new whole.
Assemblage: an art form composed of preformed natural or manufactured materials, objects, or fragments arranged in a singular composition.
These three modern forms of media have been used to convey contemporary sensibilities in art since the Cubists. Popularized by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jean [Hans] Arp, Robert Rauschenberg and later by David Hockney, collage form and its cousins, assemblage and bricolage, have been said to convey the scattered fragmentation of the contemporary psyche. Since their beginnings in the 1920’s, assemblage, bricolage, and collage have been used to redefine art, by using materials found outside of traditional fine art practices. These forms often combine traditional materials such as canvas and paint, with common household materials such as wood, paper, and glue, placing them on the same artistic plane. In this juxtaposition of elements, Like the Spice’s collage artists have sought to bring fine art to the common man, and common objects into the realm of fine art.

Assemblage, Bricolage, and Collage at Like the Spice, Art Studio, is a group exhibition that explores mixed-media representations in these mentioned forms.
