Asia Society: Asian American Women, Feminism, and the Arts March 9, 2009

Asian American Women, Feminism, and the Arts brings together a range of feminists -- an author, a visual artist, and a performance artist -- in a panel discussion moderated by Minoo Moallem, focused on the dynamics of gender, race, and activism.

Speakers:

Minoo Moallem (moderator) is Professor and Chair of Gender and Women's Studies at UC Berkeley. She is the author of many books, including Between Woman and Nation. Nationalisms, Transnational Feminisms and the State (with Caren Kaplan and Norma Alarcon).

Shailja Patel is an award-winning poet, playwright, theater artist, and political activist. She is the author of Migritude I: When Saris Speak, Dreaming In Gujurati, and Shilling Love. Her work has been translated into nine languages, and was selected for a season premiere of SPARK on KQED TV.
Cynthia Tom is a painter whose work has been exhibited at the Legion of Honor and the De Young Museum in San Francisco, as well as various galleries in New York. Her work evokes a longing for freedom of expression and persuades us to look beyond the aesthetic -- to challenge stereotypes and traditional roles, question paradigms, and encourage our internal dialogue.

Karen Tei Yamashita is a writer and academic. She has written various novels including Through the Arc of the Rain Forest, Brazil-Maru, Tropic of Orange, and Circle K Cycles. Currently, she is Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
