The Mexican Folkloric Ballet of Asheville is comprised of ten members whose objective is to transmit the Mexican traditions and customs through dance and the dance, with colorful of his clothes and their unique music.
Julie Loyd
12:45 - 1:15
Originally a dancer and child of musical theater, Julie Loyd comes across best on stage. Called an "acoustic spitfire with a kick-ass stage presence"by CURVE Magazine, this wiggly folk-rocker plays 170+ shows a year wailing away on her guitar, wearing another hole in the finish, weaving tunes with a set of gutsy vocals and stomping out her rhythm with a set of steel-toed combat boots. Though she's left behind the Broadway vibrato, she uses her movement experience to step inside her songs, contorting, kicking, and undulating to the beat of her own percussive guitar playing. She has a knack for making folk dynamic: "I'm tired of folk being seen as boring. Just because I'm playing an acoustic guitar doesn't mean I'm going to be singing about the mountains, and if I am, I'm singing loud."
Asheville Capoeira
1:30 - 2:00
The Asheville Capoeira group has been holding classes and entertaining audiences for over a year. Currently based in Biltmore village, the group is directed by Mestre Pe de Chumbo (from Bahia, Brazil). The group is made up of a diverse population of students dedicated to preserving the traditional Afro-Brazilian dace fight game of "Capoeira Angola." Defined by its acrobatic movements, spinning kicks and playful beauty, capoeira performances are always accompanied by a full band of musicians singing traditional Portuguese songs. Don't miss this rare demonstration of a traditional Afro-Brazilian cultural expression!
Ginny Wilder
2:15 - 2:45
Ginny Wilder's songs are good stories set to music. "Lessons in Life and Love" is a blend of original folk music, a little country and a little splash of rock and roll. Ginny has an uncanny ability to strike a nerve or heart -string in the listener to the point of moving them through each emotion the song is conveying. Her 3rd CD, "Lessons in Life and Love" is a collection of such stories ranging from sweet and simple with "Little Boy, Little Girl" to the complexities of post breakup realities in "Hit or Miss". Life and love are always the basis for any story-whether it is yours or someone else's. Ginny has been compared to Natalie Merchant, Tracy Chapman, Toni Childs and Catie Curtis. Her performance is graceful letting the song take center stage and inviting her listeners to think, hear, feel and enjoy. Ginny's stage presence and delivery is always geared towards the audience, playing with their emotions and leaving them wanting more. With a mixture of stories, songs and laughter, Ginny Wilder delivers a night to remember and a song to go home thinking about.

Wild Bodema means women who drum and these women can really drum! Someone's Sister
5:10 - 6:00
Although Someone's Sister has drawn comparisons to k.d. lang, Patsy Cline, and the Indigo Girls, Curve Magazine says "These wailing chicks proved on their recent CD, Hand Me Downs, that they are in a class of their own." With a rare blend of thought-provoking lyrics, rich harmonies and a positive message, Someone's Sister offers up a powerful musical energy. While Someone's Sister began as a duo, these days you can find Laura McLean, aka "the guitar guru" and drummer Tammy Somersett joining Jones and Winfree, as they take their music and message across the US. While most musicians seek personal fame and fortune, Someone's Sister sings to raise funds for the creation of a child abuse prevention foundation. With the success of their debut CD "Hand Me Downs," Someone's Sister is currently in the studio and hopes to release their next CD in the fall.
