The Vagabond, Shake and the New Times Come Together to Help High School in Need

MIAMI - Feb. 2009 - The New Times, The Vagabond and Shake announce their plan to help Miami Southridge Senior High rebuild its suffering art program by hosting an art supply drive.

The Vagabond is dedicated to supporting the community, celebrating the diverse art culture of Miami-Dade County and making a positive impact on the youth of South Florida. (((SHAKE))) is a weekly hip-hop and dance party that occurs every Thursday at the Vagabond. The New Times approached the Vagabond to host an afterparty for their Artopia event happening on February 27, 2009. This spurred an internal discussion about art and the state of art in Dade county public schools.

The Art Drive is the brain child of local artist Alouishous San Gomma. He promotes Shake Thursday Nights at the Vagabond and is a graduate of Miami Southridge Senior High, Class of 1998. "I started thinking what could we do make an already awesome event even better? Lately, times have been hard for everybody, especially public schools. When I went to Southridge, the Art Department was not a priority for the school, and with budget cuts, the art department is likely to get lost in the shuffle. Instead of charging a cover for admission to the club, we thought it would be a cool idea to ask all the people involved in and attending Artopia to donate Art Supplies to Southridge."

San Gomma called Nadine Baez, Miami Southridge 1998's Class President and asked her for help. She called Mariela Estevez, Chairperson of Southridge's art department, and figured out what the school needs: acrylic paint, tempra paint, tissue paper, paint brushes, gesso, kits of drawing pencils, plaster, sharpies, ball point pens, water color paper, canvas rolls, stretchers, glue, and glitter. "Any help would be appreciated," said Estevez, "we hope the night goes well."

In addition to Shake's usual resident DJs, excellent food and surprises, there will be a live performance from Cutler Ridge Hip Hop Group Total Control Posse and live painting in the garden by Aholsniffsglue.

This Thursday enjoy free Absolut samples from 1am - 2am.
