On Saturday, October 23, the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs at CIIS present The Art of Memoir: Writing Personal History, an evening with award-winning novelist, Danzy Senna, beginning at 6:15pm at CIIS (1453 Mission Street). The event is free and open to the public, and will be preceded by a light food/drink reception at 5:45pm. After a short reading of her own work, Danzy Senna will appear in conversation with MFA Program Chair, Dr. Cindy Shearer. The two will discuss the art of mining personal, family, and cultural histories for storytelling across multiple artistic genres, including fiction, memoir, choreography, and text/image work.
Danzy Senna's debut novel, Caucasia, the story of two biracial sisters growing up in racially charged Boston during the 1970s, became an instant national bestseller and sparked a newfound focus on biracial cultures in America. Senna is also the author of Where Did You Sleep Last Night?: A Personal History and the book, Symptomatic, a psychologically astute novel that continues to examine the complicated topic of race. Caucasia was a Los Angeles Times "Best Book of the Year," one of Glamour's three "Best Books of the Year" by a new writer, one of School Library Journal's "Best Adult Books for Young Adults," and a finalist for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
