The San Francisco Arts Commission in conjunction with the Museum of the African Diaspora are hosting an ART IMPACT speaker series event featuring renowned, musician Martin Luther. In keeping with ART IMPACT’s mission of providing a platform to explore and discuss the impact of arts education through the lens of high profile individuals, the evening will include an intimate look at how arts education has impacted Luther’s musical journey by hearing intimate stories of the singer’s life and listening to selections from previous and forthcoming releases.
Martin Luther’s music encompasses a universal appeal and the rudiments of rock and roll and classic soul music, unique to many legendary San Francisco musicians. The multi-talented singer, songwriter, actor, musician and producer’s sophomore studio release, “Rebel Soul Music,” was one of music underground’s most anticipated albums of 2004 as well as critical acclaim. Associated Press named it number 4 on its Top Ten Albums of 2004, People Magazine named RSM its “Critic’s Choice” rating the album 3.5 out of 4 stars. Martin is the only independent artist given the privilege of recording a performance session for MTV Live, on MTV.com. He was also named VH1.com, “You Outta Know” artist for two separate months. With a video for the single ‘Daily Bread’ making it to VH1 Soul’s top ten.
Martin went on to perform and tour with industry heavy-weights such as Dave Matthews, Jill Scott and Julie Mehretu. He has been seen by millions of fans as a featured member of the legendary hip hop band The Roots, which landed Martin a coveted cameo in Dave Chappelle’s comedic concert film, Block Party. Martin made his cinematic debut as a lead actor in the Sony Pictures release Across the Universe, directed by Julie Taymor. Martin also appears on the platinum plus soundtrack for Across the Universe.
