Pres. Rod Smolla of Furman University kicks off the Chautauqua Season (featuring Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Muir, Albert Einstein, Frances Perkins, W.E.B. DuBois and Mark Twain) with discussion of how art reflected their ideas and how those ideas changed America. Audience discussion followed by a tour of the Merton Simpson exhibition Confrontations. Simpson, born in Charleston, is a nationally prominent African American artist best known for a series of 22 abstract paintings done in the 1960s, during the civil rights era. Called the Confrontation series, they express the anger and frustration of the times.
