Arnold Steinhardt, violin
Celebrating Bach's Chaconne
The resonant acoustics of the Museum's concert hall have made it the ideal setting for recitals by some of the most renowned violinists of our time, including David Oistrakh, Nathan Milstein, Isaac Stern, and Henryk Szeryng. We continue this tradition with our new violin series.
This lecture/performance, by the first violinist of the Guarneri String Quartet, will delve into the humble beginnings of Bach's Chaconne as a lusty dance, describe the mystery that hangs over the work, and discuss its many appearances in Arnold Steinhardt's recently published memoir, Violin Dreams. A facsimile of Bach's strikingly beautiful 1720 autograph will be shown, and finally, Bach's entire Partita in D Minor, of which the Chaconne is the final movement, will be performed.
Special Offer: Ticket-holders to Friday or Saturday evening concerts receive a complimentary glass of wine when ordering any dinner entrée at the museum's Petrie Court Café. Offer valid on the day of your ticketed event. Call for reservations: 212-570-3964. Please present your ticket to your server when you arrive.
