Tango at The Mercury Café

Dance Like The Stars.

The tango that is danced at the Mercury Café evolved in Argentina in the 1930’s and 1940’s in an ethnic melting pot, as Jazz did here in the United States.

The music is compelling and deep. The Mercury is one of the few places in North America that hosts live Tango music regularly and offers Tango dances on Wednesday and Friday night. The dance is preceded by classes so that everyone can fully embrace this extraordinary music.

Internationally renowned dancer/instructor Tom Stermitz will teach a series of classes on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. He will also hold Tango classes on Fridays for 6 weeks beginning October 3.

Teaching in Boulder & Denver since 1996, Tom is a specialist in the rhythmic, close-embrace social style of tango typical of many clubs in Buenos Aires. This specialty has earned him invitations to workshops and Tango Festivals around the US and abroad, including Berlin, Moscow, Ann Arbor, St Louis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Portland, San Francisco, Champaign/Urbana, Hawaii, and elsewhere.

Stermitz is the Artistic Director and Producer of the Denver Tango Festivals over the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and also of the San Diego Tango Festival. These are three of the top tango festivals in the US, drawing 400 - 500 of the best dancers in the country.

The Wednesday series of classes are $5 drop-in or $25 / month for beginners and start at 6 p.m. Intermediate classes begin at 7:15 p.m. and cost $12 drop-in or $40 / month. On Fridays beginners classes are offered at 6:30 p.m. and intermediate classes at 7:30 p.m. for just $5 per class. Tom teaches Tango in a very social and accessible style.

Classes are open to all ages and you don’t need to bring a partner!
