Houston Baptist University will host the Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, archbishop of Denver, on Monday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Morris Cultural Arts Center’s Dunham Theater on the HBU campus.
Chaput’s lecture, titled “Christianity in American Political Life,” will be followed by a question and answer session featuring questions submitted by the audience. There will also be an opportunity following the lecture to meet the archbishop in the Morris Center’s McNair Hall.
Chaput, a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, was ordained a priest in 1970. Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Rapid City, S.D., in 1988 and archbishop of Denver, making him the first Native American archbishop, in 1997. He served for three years as a White House-appointed commissioner with the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. He is the author of Living the Catholic Faith: Rediscovering the Basics (Servant) and Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life (Doubleday).
This event, made possible through the generous support of the Strake Foundation, advances the goals outlined in the seventh pillar – Bring Athens and Jerusalem Together – of Houston Baptist University’s Ten Pillars vision (www.hbu.edu/vision). Archbishop Chaput’s lecture is being presented in coordination with the Pope John Paul II Forum for the Church in the Modern World at the University of St. Thomas.
Houston Baptist University is a Christian liberal arts university dedicated to the development of the intellect, the moral character, and the spiritual lives of its students.
