The birth of Singaporean contemporary art can be traced to the early 1970s. Since then, the art scene has prospered with the emergence of artist collectives such as The Artists Village, Trimurti and 5th Passage. In the late 1980s, Singapore’s rise as an economic power provoked local artists to instinctively question the Singaporean identity in the wake of its rapid progression. Covering 40 years of Singapore contemporary art history, this lecture examines the country’s artistic milestones, significant artist contributions, as well as the artistic landscape and its future direction.
