The 2009 Appalachian Skills Camp, geared for students in grades 4-12, will be held Aug. 10-14 in the Appalachian Gateway Center on Southern State Community College’s South Campus in Fincastle. The annual event will feature five workshop selections this year, including pottery, watercolor painting, knitting, photography and leather crafting.
POTTERY: The basic principles of shaping, glazing and firing pottery will be explored. Students will complete several projects using hand-shaping and coil techniques. $25.
WATERCOLOR PAINTING: Students will be introduced to materials, techniques and the creative process of watercolor painting They will learn about the staining of pigment, washes, value, hue, tones and color blending. $50.
BEGINNING KNITTING: Students will learn the basic knitting stitches and will complete projects geared toward a beginning learner. $25.
PHOTOGRAPHY: A brief history of photography and how a camera works will be the focus of this workshop. Students will experience hands-on use of both digital and film cameras. They will also learn to critique and frame photographs. $45.
LEATHER CRAFTING: Students will be introduced to the procedure of tanning skins to form leather. They will use the stamping process to create designs on small articles such as bracelets and key fobs. (The leather crafting workshop will be held Aug. 11-14.) $40.
