The Appalachian Artists Guild will offer several traditional arts and crafts workshops from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, at the Appalachian Gateway Center on Southern State Community College’s South Campus in Fincastle.

Throughout the day, local artisans will teach the following classes: Log Cabin Chicken Pincushion, Corn Husk Doll, Mountain Dulcimer, Heirloom Decorated Egg, Introduction to Hand Spinning, and Quilted Candle Mat. At noon, an herbal box lunch will be available for $8.50, provided by Judy Lewis of Lewis Mountain Herbs, or participants may bring their own lunch. •Log Cabin Chicken Pincushion, presented by Betty Fischer, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Students will create a three-inch-by-four-inch miniature chicken with a beak, comb and tail, pieced together in the log-cabin method using strips of light and dark fabric. May be used as a pincushion or for decorative purposes. Participants will need to bring a sewing machine, natural color thread, fabric or embroidery scissors, straight pins, hand-sewing needle and a seam ripper. All other materials will be supplied by the instructor. Cost is $10.

•Corn Husk Doll, presented by Debbie Cook, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. All materials will be supplied by the instructor. Cost is $12.

•Beginning Mountain Dulcimer, presented by Virginia Spillman, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Cost is $15.

•Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer, presented by Sue Frump, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Cost is $15.

•Heirloom Decorated Egg, presented by Marta Padgett, will be held from 1-3 p.m. All materials will be supplied by the instructor. Cost is $10.

•Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer for Group Playing, presented by Virginia Spillman and Sue Frump, will be held from 1-3 p.m. Cost is $15.

•Introduction to Hand Spinning, presented by Bootsie Robison, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a break for lunch from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Students will learn to sort, wash and card wool, and use a drop spindle. All materials will be supplied and spinning wheels will be available; however, participants are asked to bring a wheel and hand cards if possible. Cost is $25.

•Quilted Candle Mat, presented by Kathy Lohse, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a break for lunch from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Students will create a machine-quilted and appliquéd 15-inch round candle mat in two choices of colors, as well as learn to set a sewing machine for machine quilting and appliquéing. Participants will need to bring a sewing machine and scissors. Cost is $35.
