Navies must have a toolbox of platforms, sensors and weapon which are employed together in a coherent manner if they are to rapidly locate and destroy, or where necessary, avoid a modern submarine threat. This is particularly important in this region or the world where there has been a proliferation of modern submarines, including nuclear powered and air independent propulsion types. However, successful anti submarine warfare (ASW) does not depend on modern platfomrs and smart systems alone; it is highly dependent on having well trainied, confident and experienced personnel as well.
Whilst the ASW toolbox consists of a wide range of sensors, including electromagnetic and visual, acoustic sensors are used extensively in most anti submarine search strategies and dominate in the submarine prosecution phase. This highlights the importance of practical application of acoustics in ASW for personnel operating and employing ASW systems at sea, in addition to engineers, scientists and managers responsible for supporting or enhancing such systems or, indeed, developing new systems.
