Actress Annette Bening, with film clips & conversation hosted by Steven Winn, in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of American Conservatory Theater:
As a student and member of American Conservatory Theater from 1980 to 1985, Annette Bening acted in plays as diverse as "Our Town" and "Macbeth." "Those few years as an actor on the Geary Theater stage grounded me professionally and personally," she has said. Her extensive theater training informs all of her stage and film roles. Bening earned critical praise and a Tony nomination for her role in Tina Howe's widely acclaimed "Coastal Disturbances" in 1987. She has become one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood for her performances in films such as "Valmont," "Postcards from the Edge," and "Bugsy." She received her first Academy Award nomination in 1990 for "The Grifters," playing a ruthless hustler. Bening also received Oscar nominations for "American Beauty" and "Being Juia," and a Golden Globe nomination for her stand-out performance in "Running with Scissors." Annette Bening was awarded a Golden Globe for her portrayal of stage diva Julia Lambert in "Being Julia," a role that required constant but subtle shifts between stage and screen acting.
