Erstwhile rock-critic Gregg Turner claimed that his band, Vom, formed in the mid-'70s under the premise that the point of punk rock was "salient stupidity." Purposely goofy songs like "I am in Love with Your Mom" and "Electrocute Your Cock" didn't endear Vom (which also featured scribes Richard Meltzer and "Metal" Mike Saunders) to the more "serious" punk groups who thought it was bad enough being mocked in print, let alone by the opening band.

With Meltzer's departure, the band evolved into the Angry Samoans, which retained Vom's jokey (if you got it), frustrated-teenage-asshole lyrical slant over music that fused ´60s and ´70s proto-punk with traditional hard-rock fare like KISS. After being banned from most Hollywood clubs, they could only get gigs in Los Angeles' suburbs -- where, incidentally, the hardcore scene was quickly replacing the arty old guard. As punk became something jocks could like, suddenly the dumb-seeming Samoans actually fit in, and the band quickly adapted its tunes to slam-dance speed. Which brings us up-to-date. Although later records betrayed their pop and garage fandom, the Samoans now exist as a "weekend punk rock party band," according to Saunders.
