Anami Vice, the Vancouver-born solo artist, had two constants throughout his youth: art provided by his father, a renowned painter, and education courtesy of his University professor mother. Young Vice dabbled in several visual mediums, but his love and affinity for music pre-destined he’d end up in the recording studio. As for his education, Vice earned an Honors degree in Philosophy from UBC. And, unlike his college-panning peers in the industry, he’ll tell you it was the best thing he ever did.

That is until 2008, while working as a bartender, Vice recorded and released an EP, ‘Ne Wfut Ure’ (‘New Future’). The album was a mostly self-indulgent experiment with intentionally rough and sparse beats. The lyrics were cryptic with obscure references and inside jokes. While his stage show met with good reviews, most people had trouble penetrating the album. Vice admits half the time, even he couldn’t figure out what he was talking about.

Learning from his mistakes (or just content to have been able to make them), in late 2009, Vice set out to make the tracks he knew he was capable of making. Self-produced, self-engineered and made to his particular standards. Full of infectious beats, catchy hooks and intelligent, but not unintelligable, lyrics.

Call and Response is the debut offering from this new set of recordings. It’s the first in what will be a long string of singles, each released with it’s own branding and cover art.
